House Republicans unanimously voted to elect Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker on Wednesday in a stunning turnaround that came more than three weeks into a standoff that descended the chamber into a crisis of its own creation. Johnson, an unlikely candidate for speaker just weeks ago, was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference. And by the evening, lawmakers spoke of a Johnson speakership as if it were all-but guaranteed. House Republicans sprung to their feet as House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik nominated Johnson for the speakership ahead of the vote on Wednesday, delivering a standing ovation as chants of “Mike” rang out. “Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the people’s House,” Stefanik said.

The House narrowly voted to oust Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, dooming the House speaker to a fate that seemed almost guaranteed since he took the gavel in January, with a group of rebels in his conference nipping at his heels. “The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant,” the clerk announced as the vote concluded. A temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – is expected to take over based upon a list of succession that McCarthy submitted in January, according to House rules . McCarthy has the support of most of his members for remaining speaker, but his conference has been riddled with infighting. If just a handful of those members joined with all Democrats, McCarthy would indeed be imperiled. It remains to be seen how many of those members – or others – might support a motion to oust McCarthy. So with a razor-thin GOP majority in the House, whether McCarthy keeps his gavel will almost certainly depend on Democrats. And adding to the troubles was McCarthy’s insistence on Sunday that Democrats were “willing to let government shutdown,” despite their support for the legislation that outnumbered Republicans’.

CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy helped secure a debt limit deal – now he has to secure its passage in the House, with little room for error and a looming threat to his speakership. In a win for McCarthy, a key Republican said he expects to support a rule to set parameters for debate. The powerful House Rules Committee must still vote to adopt the rule, but with that anticipated support, it is now on track to do so — a hurdle that must be cleared before the bill can come to the House floor for a final vote. If he did not support the rule, the debt limit bill may have been unable to advance to the House floor. Roy and Norman have both emerged as leading critics of the bipartisan debt limit bill.
